Orthopaedic trauma

Orthopaedic trauma refers to any severe injury to the joints, bones, and/or soft tissue that is caused by an external source. These injuries are often the result of an accident, such as a fall or a car accident. Trauma can also be caused by overuse, for example, running long distances.

The goal of orthopaedic surgery is to restore the function of the injured body parts as quickly and effectively as possible.

Causes of Orthopaedic Trauma

Traumatic orthopaedic injuries are most often caused by:

  • Being involved in a motorcycle or car accident
  • Being injured while playing a sport
  • Falling
  • Physical violence
  • Natural disasters

When to See an Orthopaedic Surgeon

Life-threatening injuries, such as broken or protruding bones, require an urgent trip to the emergency room, where an orthopaedic surgeon will treat you right away.

Other times, orthopaedic trauma isn't life-threatening, but still requires specialised healthcare. Some of the most common injuries that require orthopaedic treatment include:

  • Open fractures (Broken bone that breaks the skin)
  • Closed fractures (Broken bone that does break the skin)
  • Stress fractures (Small cracks in the bone caused by overuse of a joint)
  • Dislocation (A joint forced out of position)
  • Overuse injuries

Treatment

Dr Mohideen will only use surgical treatments if necessary. First, he will try non-surgical treatments such as physical therapy, rest, and supportive braces/casts.

Sometimes, he will perform minor surgery to place screws, pins, wires and plates on the bones to stabilise the joint. Severe injuries may require more complex surgeries such as limb lengthening, bone grafting, and complex reconstruction.
