Shoulder replacement surgery is used to remove damaged areas of bone and replaces them with parts made of plastic and metal (implants). Damage to the shoulder joint can cause pain, stiffness and weakness, and this may require replacement surgery.
Shoulder implants are available in various sizes and shapes. Replacement options include partial and total replacements.
Shoulder arthroscopy, also known as keyhole surgery, is a minimally invasive type of surgery that uses a tiny camera (arthroscope) to repair or examine the tissues inside or around the shoulder joint. The arthroscope is inserted via a small cut into the skin.
Dr Mohideen may recommend shoulder surgery if you have a painful condition that isn't responding to conservative treatment, such as physical therapy, rest, medications or injections.
Overuse, injury, and age-related wear and tear are responsible for most shoulder problems. Shoulder arthroscopy can also help relieve painful symptoms of soft tissues surrounding the shoulder joint.
After surgery, you'll stay overnight in hospital before being discharged. Nurses will monitor you and provide pain medication. You'll need someone to drive you home and stay with you for at least the first night.
Recovering from arthroscopy is often faster than recovering from open surgery. However, it may still take weeks to months for your shoulder joint to fully recover.
